Milestone Birthday Wow

Hi there

I have a milestone birthday card to share with you today. This was a commission from a lovely friend for her husband who turned 50 last week. I think a 'zero' birthday always deserves a special card, as it marks the beginning of a new decade.

I have chosen a tri-fold card, that folds to fit into a standard DL envelope. This is a simple 'fancy fold', so perfect for a masculine card, but you can dress it up as much as you want. I've chosen to go with a classic black, white and gold colour combo that packs a punch.  Here's a first look.

Stampin' Up! Tri-Fold Milestone Birthday Card - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

This is the card folded flat, ready to go into the envelope. I have used the full length of a sheet of white A4 card stock, divided into 3. The photo doesn't do the gold foil and glimmer accents justice; it's very shiny and sparkly!

This photo shows the card standing, perfect for display. At the tallest point it is the full height of the A4 sheet (21cm).

In this close-up photo you can see I have built up the gold foil '50' with 5 layers of of Crushed Curry card stock to add more dimension. Above that, I have attached the gold foil 'celebrate' on the edge of the first fold and then adhered 2 additional layers to the reverse side to add dimension and make it more robust.

This photo shows the card open, revealing the balloons on the last fold that are attached to the Gold Glimmer 'happy birthday' die cut with metallic thread. The centre panel is left blank for the giver's message.

Finally, here is the card open flat, so you can see the panels and the dimensions. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

A Big Birthday

Hi there

I've got a masculine birthday card to share with you today. Mum's husband John has just turned 80, so I wanted to make a special card to recognise this fabulous milestone. John is a wonderfully kind and caring man and he looks after Mum so well. He is also a fabulous handyman and can fix just about anything, so I thought the retired 'Nailed It' stamp set would be perfect for his card.

I have chosen the Bridge Fold as it has a lot of presence without being too fussy. This is a larger size card that requires a custom envelope and extra postage, but it is worth it for this special occasion. The finished size when folded flat is 15.5cm x 21.5cm (6 1/8" x 8 1/2").

Stampin' Up! Nailed It Bridge Fold Card - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

The base card is Real Red and the first matte is Pacific Point and the background is one of the wood grain designs from the Wood Textures Designer Paper stack.  I have stamped the tools on Silver Foil with Stazon Ink and die cut them with the coordinating framelits. I stamped them again on Whisper White with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and used the Stampin' Blends alcohol marks to colour the handles. I had to use a colour matched Copic for the Pacific Point screwdriver. I fussy cut the handles and added them to the die cut Silver Foil tools.

For the centrepiece I have die cut the 'happy birthday' in Pacific Point, Silver Foil and Real Red card stock and layered them to up the wow factor and complement the silver in the tools and trim.

I have put the writing panel on the centre back of the card, using more of the images and die cuts from the 'Nailed It' stamp set and coordinating framelits to decorate it. The greeting is from one of my favourite and unfortunately retired stamp sets 'Balloon Adventures'.

The card is folded toward the right to make it flat. You can see the embossed foil panel that wasn't really visible in the first photo, that matches the bridge across the front that the '80' is mounted on.

I used the Envelope Punch Board to make a presentation envelope from a 12" x 12" piece of Pacific Point card stock, as I am pretty sure he will want to keep it. I then popped it into a standard C5 envelope to post.

Stamps Nailed It (retired), Balloon Adventures (retired)

AWH - Favourite Bundle

Hi there

Today the Art with Heart Team girls are showing you their favourite bundles from the 2017 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue. Bundles make creating a breeze, because of the perfect coordination. It's a bonus that you get 10% off by bundling the products together too. There are 24 bundles in the new catalogue so ask us about them, or for a catalogue today!

Today, I'm sharing a project with the Daisy Delight bundle. This bundle has been soooo popular that all of the stock that was intended to last for months has been sold in weeks. Never fear, it will be back.  Products in the bundle are the 'Daisy Delight' stamp set and the fabulous Daisy Punch. It also coordinates with the Delightful Daisy designer paper and the Faceted Gems.

I've made a fancy fold card that uses all of these products. It is called a Double Display card and I saw a tutorial by Amanda Bates. Her card is 6" square, using 12 x 12 card stock.  I wanted to use our A4 card stock and have altered it to fit and also to make it slightly smaller (it is rectangular).
Stampin' Up! Daisy Delight Bundle - Judy May, Just Judy Designs
This is the card closed with the belly around it and resting on the custom box-elope as it is quite thick when folded. The base card is Soft Sky and I've used Wisteria Wonder and Calypso Coral as accent colours with the gorgeous floral design from the Delightful Daisy paper pack.
Stampin' Up! Daisy Delight Bundle - Judy May, Just Judy Designs
This is the card fully open. I have used the small floral design paper on the inside panels. In the centre the Wisteria background has been embossed with the Petal Burst embossing folder. I have used the Happy Birthday Thinlits for a bold greeting, cut from Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer. I have created a shadow using Silver Foil underneath and slightly offset, which is easier to see in the close-up below.
I have added a writing panel on the reverse of the centre panel, with a DSP trim and simple stamped flower from the Daisy Delight stamp set.
For the belly band, I have placed a stitched circle underneath and the Calypso Coral banner on top, as I didn't want the Wisteria circle to be too dominant. In the centre is my fluffy white daisy with Calypso Coral and So Saffron centre, topped with a clear Faceted Gem.
Finally, this is the card from the top, showing the folds.

Today I have 3 projects to share with you, using the 'Beautiful You' stamp set. This has been a very popular item from the Occasions Catalogue with it's great set of line images and sentiments for many occasions. It also lends itself to a number of techniques, so you get more ways to use it and love it! The first card is a great one to have in your stash and it would look fabulous in a range of bright colours. Black, white and red is definitely one of my favourites, though.
Stampin' Up! Beautiful You Birthday - Judy May, Just Judy Designs
I have stamped the lady in in Basic Black Archival ink and then used the brushstroke stamp over the top in Real Red. You can't get easier than that. The image was cropped with the largest oval from my favourite Stitched Shapes Framelits (now back in stock!) and matted on a scalloped oval from the Layering Ovals Framelits. The greeting was stamped on thick Whisper White and then cropped with the banner framelit from the Cupcake Cutouts set. It has score marks to fold the tails for a lovely 3D effect. I finished with some bling and a cute heart from the Brights Enamel Shapes.  You  can see that I have also decorated the envelope with the heart topiary from the 'Vertical Greetings' stamp set (from the current Annual Catalogue) in the same colours for a coordinating finish.
For the inside, I have added a strip of the (retired) Candy Cane Lane spotted washi at the bottom and the heart topiary image from the 'Vertical Greetings' stamp set. I used ink pads to colour the heart and pot and then a Stampin' Write marker for the stem.

Tools     Stitched Shapes Framelits, Layering Ovals Framelits, Cupcake Cutouts, Big Shot, Smoky Slate Stampin' Write Marker

The next card I have is a fancy fold called Double 'Z' Joy Fold. I love how special looks, but it is very easy to make.  I have used the image of the dancing lady on this one, which I have coloured with the new Watercolour Pencils and a Blender Pen.

Stampin Up! Beautiful You Double Z Joy Fold - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

The base layer of the card is Melon Mambo and the top layer is thick Whisper White. I've added the small floral design from the Brights Designer Paper Stack to the inside of the base.  The coloured art piece has been adhered to a Basic Black mat with a trim from the Flourish Thinlits dies on the left edge.  You can see I've also stamped the envelope, using the floral cluster from the 'Birthday Blossoms' stamp set.

Stampin Up! Beautiful You Double Z Joy Fold - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

This is the card open, where you can see the other two panels. The middle panel has the leaf die cut from the Flourish Thinlits and the black bird die cut from the Birds & Blooms Thinlits. For the end panel, I have used the brushstroke stamp (stamped off) as a background for the Live, Laugh, Love sentiment.

Stampin Up! Beautiful You Double Z Joy Fold - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

The writing panel is on the reverse side of the base and I have used the floral cluster from the 'Birthday Blossoms' set on the corners with the greeting also coming from the same stamp set. I've used the Watercolour Pencils to shade the banner on the greeting and finished with another black bird in the corner. You can get a tutorial for this fancy fold card in my Tutorial Store here.

Ink Melon Mambo, Basic Black Archival
Accessories Rhinestones Basic Jewels
Tools     Flourish Thinlits, Birds & Blooms Thinlits, Big Shot, Watercolour Pencils, Blender Pen

My final project uses the image of the lady with the umbrella and the paper piecing and reflection techniques. Paper piecing is a great option for any line images as an alternative to colouring. I suggest using paper with a small design for images of this size. I have used the Watercolour Pencils to add a little colour to the umbrella and the reflection.

The base card is Sweet Sugarplum stamped with the leaf from the Sale-a-bration stamp set 'Avant Garden'  in Versamark ink. The art piece has been matted onto Rich Razzleberry card stock with the vanilla Lace Trim on the edge. The greeting has been die cut with the Tags & Labels Framelits and finished with a tiny flower from the (retired) Itty Bitty Shapes Punch pack.

For the inside, I've finished it with a strip of washi from the Playful Palette set and the flower from 'Avant Garden' stamped in Rich Razzleberry.

CASE-ing the Catty - Occasions Favourite

Hi there

Welcome to the first CASE-ing the Catty blog hop for 2016.  We are starting out the year with the fabulous new Occasions Catalogue, plus we will be looking at the Sale-a-bration catalogue as well.

You may have come from Emma's blog, but if you are visiting me, you can join the trail here by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the post.

This week we are selecting our favourite project from the Occasions catty (or one of them, at least!). When I was browsing through the catalogue for the first time, this card jumped out at me.

Screen Shot 01-10-16 at 01.18 PM

I think it was a combination of the beautiful floral image from the 'Birthday Blooms' stamp set and the colours used that attracted my eye.  I love colouring and this stamp is perfect for colouring therapy.  I have created a birthday card for a special friend using the same Blushing Bride colours and I have paired it with Pool Party for a soft feminine look.  This is the front of the card when closed:

Stampin' Up! Birthday Blooms & Birthday Bouquet DSP Lever card - Judy May , Just Judy Designs

I have gold embossed the lovely birthday greeting at the top. Did you notice that the font in 'Birthday Blooms' is the same as that in the 'Cottage Greetings' stamp set, so you can mix and match the greetings. This is what you see when you open the card:

Stampin' Up! Birthday Blooms & Birthday Bouquet DSP Lever card - Judy May , Just Judy Designs

I have created the fancy fold 'lever' card (I used the tutorial by Kirsteen Gill), which is a great one for a special occasion.  I have added a panel of the lovely 'Birthday Bouquet' designer paper which has the coordinating Blushing Bride and Pool Party colours. On the writing panel, I have stamped and coloured the smaller floral image from the 'Birthday Blooms' stamp set. The row of pearls and Blushing Bride cotton ribbon trim finish it off.

Stampin' Up! Birthday Blooms using Copic markers - Judy May, Just Judy Designs

This is a close up of the main flower on the front of the card. I have stamped and coloured the largest flower a second time before fussy cutting and popping it up over the top of the main image. Because you need to cut right on the edge of the image, my tip is to use a coordinating colour marker and go around the edge to cover the white. It gives a seamless finish to your image. I have used my Copic markers this time, to colour the image.

Circle Thinlits Flip Cards

Hi there

I have been playing with the Stampin' Up! Circle Card thinlits die that makes the creation of 'flip' cards a lot easier.  I find the basic card cut with the thinlits die a bit skimpy when it comes to writing your message, so the extended version with the fold in panel is much better. It also gives you more scope for decoration as well.

For me, these cards really become something special when you add some extra layers and embellishment. This takes more effort, but well worth it for a special occasion. I have 3 cards here showing some different options for embellishment.

This first card was created for a recent class. It is bold and bright and perfect for a special occasion, although I have kept the sentiment fairly generic. It has the added benefit of a gift card pocket on the fold in flap, which keeps it secure.  I like the belly band on this to keep it all tucked in, as there is a bit more bulk with the gift card pocket.

The 2 1/2" circle punch creates the perfect mat for the circle on the card and the gingham circle from the 'Kind and Cozy' stamp set fits the bill perfectly, to frame your sentiment.

The next one has the exended fold in flap, but without the gift card pocket. I have seen the writing panel on the fold in flap, but I prefer it in the centre, leaving the end panel for further decoration. I have used some of the extra dies (chevrons and 'hi') that come with this die set for embellishment. You can't beat the classic black and white combo for a fresh looking card. I've heat embossed one of the silhouettes in black from the lovely 'Serene Silhouettes' stamp set for the front circle. I was glad to see this set carry forward into the new Annual Catalogue.

Another of the silhouette images has been heat embossed in white on the fold in panel for a strong contrast.

This last card was made for a lovely friend's birthday. I have added plenty of bling on this one with the silver glimmer paper added to both sides of the circle.  To cut the glimmer paper circle (there is no punch or circle die the exact size), I trimmed a piece of glimmer paper to 2 3/4" square and then put it over the circle piece of the die and ran it through the Big Shot. It leaves a small piece on both sides to cut with scissors on the embossed line, so it is pretty easy.

The large image from the 'Regarding Dahlias' stamp set has been heat embossed in white on Wisteria Wonder. I used a Stampin' Write marker and blender pen to add some highlights to the flower and punched it out with the 2 1/2" circle punch.

I have stamped the flower image in craft white for the inside back panel to continue the theme. The sentiment from the new 'Amazing Birthday' stamp set has been heat embossed in white for the inside circle.

If you would like to make this project, I have created a tutorial that  provides 3 sets of measurements for the layers on all of the panels of the card and instructions for how to cut these layers. You can find it here or click on the button at the bottom of the post.

Fancy Fold for Mum

Hi there

It was my Mum's birthday this week, so I wanted something a little bit different for her. We recently had a lovely stamping day and I was shown how to make this Double 'Z' fold card. It is surprisingly easy to make and packs a punch as it uses Designer Paper for the base.

I have used my favourite Coastal Cabana Designer Paper for a fresh look. A belly band holds the card closed and it is topped with a frame created with the 'Deco' framelits. I added some cute flowers from the 'Petite Petals' stamp set and the matching punch makes these a quick embellishment. I haven't used them before, but these framelits are a lovely shape and the stamped frame that matches the smallest of the framelits is from the 'Morning Post Numbers' stamp set.

This is the card once it is open.  The centre panel matted with Coastal Cabana card stock ensures the card will stand up firmly.

You can find a detailed tutorial to make this card here.

Another Flip Card

Hi there

As I mentioned in my previous post, I decided to try another 'flip' card, this time using the Labels Framelits to cut the shape.  I used this Youtube video to learn how to do it, and like most things, it is so easy when you know how.  Give this a try, as you definitely don't need to purchase specific dies to create flip cards.

I've created another Mother's Day card, this time using the 'Twitterpated' DSP and coordinating colours.  The 'Wonderful Mother' stamp brush from MDS was put to use again. This time I increased the size of the sentiments and printed them in Island Indigo and punched them out with the wide oval punch. Here is the card closed.

Here is the card open, showing the centre label.

Finally, this one shows the inside of the card.

Mother's Day Flip Card

Hi there

Mother's Day is coming soon, but there is still time to make a special card for your Mum.  Today I have a 'Flip' card  for you (also called a 'Flip Flop' card), which adds some extra interest to this special occasion card.

There are a number of templates around on the Internet and now cutting dies are also available. However, you can easily make this basic shaped card with your standard papercraft tools (trimmer or ruler and craft knife). I wanted a square card and a wider border on the left, so I used the basic principle to create a template for a 14cm x 14cm square card. I always test my measurements on some scrap card first and usually need to adjust it a bit before making the 'real' one.  I used my Stampin' Trimmer to make the cuts as I find it easier and more accurate than a craft knife.

I have used the blue and yellow floral print from the 'Print Poetry' Designer Series Paper Stack and paired it with the Summer Starfruit pattern from the 'Birds of a Feather' DSP on a base of Marina Mist card stock. This is the card flat.

This is how the card looks when it stands up and you can see that the centre panel is actually rectangular.

This photo shows the reverse side of the centre panel where you write your message. I didn't have the 'Wonderful Mother' stamp set, so I purchased and downloaded the 'Wonderful Mother' stamp brush for MDS in a couple of minutes and then printed it out and cut the panel to size. This is a great example of a hybrid project. You can use the MDS stamp brushes in other software such as Photoshop Elements if you just want do something quick and simple like this. It is also cheaper than buying the stamp set!

There are some Youtube videos showing how to make the Flip card using framelits to cut a shaped centre panel.  I will give this a try next.

Project Details
Stamps Wonderful Mother, Delightful Dozen, Oh, Hello
Card stock & Papers     Marina Mist, Wild Wasabi, Very Vanilla, Print Poetry Designer Series Paper Stack, Birds of a Feather DSP, Subtles Pattern Stack
Ink Midnight Muse, So Saffron, Wild Wasabi
Accessories 5/8" Vanilla Flower Trim, Marina Mist Taffeta ribbon (retired), Basic Pearls
Tools     Labels Framelits, Little Leaves Sizzlit, Big Shot, Itty Bitty Sahpes Punch Pack,  Dimensionals, Sponge Dauber, Copic B12 (to colour pearls)

Enjoy your weekend!

Just Add Ink #154

 Hi there

It has been a race against time to get this card posted before the deadline of the Just Add Ink #154 challenge.  This week the challenge is to create a pop-up card.  I love making special cards and 3-D projects and I have been wanting to do one of these for a while.  I had the idea very quickly, but the execution took longer than I expected (I can hear 'just stick it down' echoing in my head!).  I think this is what you call a 'labour of love' as it will be my Mum's birthday in less than 2 weeks, so this one is for her.

I have used the beautiful 'Stippled Blossoms' stamp set which is perfect for elegant floral cards. The colour combos for the flowers are Pretty in Pink with Regal Rose highlights and Regal Rose with Rose Red highlights. The green combo is Wild Wasabi with Gumball Green highlights, which I was very happy with.

You will have to excuse the lighting in the photos as it was very gloomy in Melbourne this afternoon, so I had to use artificial light. This is the front of the card, which is 14cm x 14cm.

For the pop-up feature, I wanted a flower box full of blossoms and this is what I came up with.

The flower box has been embossed with the Woodgrain folder that has been inked with Soft Suede first. I die cut an oval and adhered it to the back of the flower box and used it as the base to arrange the blossoms. I think the Honeycomb embossed panel at the rear makes a nice backdrop for the blossoms and sentiment.  Overall, I was pretty happy with the result.

The mechanism is very simple, a couple of straight cuts through the centre of the insert as shown below. The only tricky bit is adhering the insert so that it folds properly, but stays upright when open.
