CASE-ing the Catty - CASE a Layout

This week, our challenge is to CASE a layout from page 101 of the Annual Catalogue.

Here is a closer look at the card I have used for my inspiration. The elements that spoke to me were the double frame and coloured images popped up from the background. My initial thought was to make a diorama card with my chosen stamp set Seaside Notions, which I was fortunate to be able to borrow from a lovely crafting friend.  However, after making my card I think I'll be investing in this stamp set as it has a great set of sea-themed images (and I LOVE seahorses) as well as useful greetings that aren't too large.  

Well, the best laid creative plans didn't come to fruition as I had planned. I've taken the inspiration photo and used it to create this portrait faux diorama card. Once I decided which of the Stitched Rectangle Dies I wanted to use, it was a matter of calculating the width of the borders to keep it in proportion. The finished card is standard height (14.85cm) and 11.1 wide and the frame is 6mm deep.  I started by sponging my background panel with Crumb Cake , Pool Party, Blueberry Bushel and then more Pool Party to simulate the light coming through the water. I stamped the dotted image in Soft Suede over the top of the Crumb Cake to look more like the gritty bottom sand.

Once the sponged panel was finished, I used Foam Strips to pop up the Crumb Cake frame over the top and layout out my elements. On the left is the seaweed die cut from Old Olive Vellum from the Perennial Essence Vellum Cardstock pack using the Smooth Sailing Dies.  The other images are from the Seaside Notions stamp set, stamped in various colours of ink and then coloured with Stampin' Blends Alcohol Markers. There are no dies with this stamp set unfortunately, so I have fussy cut them right on the line and inked the edges with a coordinating Stampin' Write Marker. 

I wanted a very 3D 'floaty' effect for my card, so I just attached the seaweed at the bottom and then curled the seahorse around it and adhered it just in the centre on a foam pad, so the head is free. The coral and shells are popped up at various heights on foam pads. When all the elements were in position on the sponged background, I adhered the Blueberry Bushel frame over the top. The sides of the frame fold over, encasing the Crumb Cake border and are adhered under the long edges of the sponged background. It is open at the top and bottom like a normal diorama card. The 'box frame' is then adhered to the Blueberry Bushel card base. I finished with a trio of Frosted Epoxy Droplets for air bubbles and the greeting from the Itty Bitty Birthdays stamp set stamped in Pretty Peacock and die cut to size with the Rectangle Stitched Dies. 

For the inside I have a continued with the Stitched Rectangle Dies to create a Crumb Cake border for my writing panel. I sponged the bottom edge to match the front of the card and popped up the coral on the right edge, together with the Sand Dollar and small shell. I added some stretched Copper Trim under the Sand Dollar for a bit of extra texture.  The greetings from the Itty Bitty Birthday stamp set were stamped before adding the frame. 

It isn't really a post-friendly card, but luckily this one is going to be hand delivered and I will make a coordinating box-elope for it, so it travels safely. Despite the initial hiccups, I'm really happy with how the card turned out!

Your card looks amazing. I love how you’ve taken various elements, like the double frame and created your own version which has ended up looking very different from the original, but you can see where you got your inspiration from. Beautiful card and the seahorse is so cute. I love looking at the seahorses at the aquarium or zoo when I go.
