Freshly Made #30

Hi there

In complete contrast to last weekend's wintry weather, we have a gorgeous, sunny weekend in Melbourne.  I have been out sweeping today as the leaves are well and truly coming down. My roses are enjoying their last hurrah for the season and I have a photo of one of my favourites at the end of the post.

Today, the card I have for you is based on this week's Freshly Made Sketch #30, shown below.

I have been wanting to use this doily stamp called 'Hello, Doily' (not currently available in Australia) and this sketch is a great opportunity.  I have white embossed it on Island Indigo card stock and then matched it will the Pool Party floral from the 'Domestic Goddess' DSP because it is so fresh and sweet. The centre of the doily is a Calypso Coral flower (in the Joanne Leddy style) with a pearl centre, sprayed with some Champage shimmer mist. The gingham panel has been stamped with the PTI 'Background Basics: Gingham' stamp.  I have made this into a Mother's Day card for my lovely mother-in-law Betty.

Soft & Sweet - For Mum

Hi there

It has been a real sunshine and showers Autumn day on this Easter Monday in Melbourne.  There has been a really chilly wind that says winter is on the way.  My lovely white Japonica Camelia is already flowering and I had my first thoughts of warming soup. I whipped up some creamy cauliflower and potato soup with bacon for lunch as I had the items on hand and it was really yummy. I'm sure it will be even better for lunch tomorrow.

Although colour challenges aren't my strong point, I thought the lovely colour combo at Just Add Ink this week was something I could manage.  Here it is:

Mother's Day is on the horizon, so I have taken the opportunity to get an early start on this occasion with a soft and 'girly' card for my Mum. I inked up the lovely 'Bordering on Romance' stamp set from the new Autumn/Winter Mini for the first time and it is lovely to colour. I rarely colour on Very Vanilla card stock, but I like the resulting soft effect with these colours.  I've also used lots of other goodies from the new Mini - there is a lot to love in this one!  I've popped up both layers of labels and the group of 3 flowers in the spray.  This card has lots of layers and texture and definitely doesn't qualify as 'clean and simple', but I'm happy with the end result.

Elegant Wishes

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.  It has been very spring-like here in Melbourne with sunshine interspersed with showers.

During the week, a colleague asked me to make an engagement card for her.  Given there were no specifications as such, I decided on something simple and elegant with a touch of bling.  My colour scheme is Cherry Cobbler and Basic Black with the off-white of Shimmer cardstock and the gorgeous black flocked paper from the Mocha Morning DSP. The top embossed panel was sprayed with champagne shimmer mist for extra sparkle, although it doesn't show on the photo.

I made the flower using petals from the new Blossom Petals punch, which have been sponged with Cherry Cobbler ink and shaped with the bone folder and attached to a base.   The centre is a rolled rose - you can create one yourself by cutting a spiral and rolling it up, but I have used the MFT rolled rose die because the scalloped petals look more realistic. The sentiment was done on the computer and I have printed it on Shimmer card and then die cut it with an MFT Greetings die. Some butterflies and bling finish it off. 

  

I have decorated the inside very simply with some DSP and a strip of the tiny scallops from the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch.  Given it is so dimensional, I will make a box for it as well. I hope she likes it.

Pearls and Lace

Welcome to a new week in another new month.  The year is disappearing so quickly, it will be time to make Christmas cards again soon (sorry for that reminder!).  Sunday is Mother's Day and I have made this card for my Mum, who is a pearls and lace kind of lady. 

I have kept the design really simple, given the bold embellishments I have used. The DSP is the lovely Springtime Vintage that was available in the US in their last mini.  I've matched it with Rich Razzleberry to give it some 'pop' and lovely lace that I've had for ages (lace being top of mind after 'that' wedding). I made another of the gorgeous Joanne Leddy cardstock flowers in textured Very Vanilla, as the centrepiece.  This time I used a 5/16" brad and a larger flower punch for the centre which is a good platform for the large flat back pearl in the centre.

This and that...

It was a gorgeous Autumn weekend in Melbourne and I enjoyed a spot of gardening, planting some cute purple violas and a new Gardenia that I struck from cuttings. Speaking of plants, I had to take a photo of my first Camellia of the season. This is a beautiful symmetrical white Japonica, called 'Early Pearly'. I have espaliered  two of these between the metal frame of my clothes line.  Sounds weird when you say it like that, but it does disguise this rather boring but necessary piece of equipment!

 

 If you are like me, you are always looking for new options for your craft storage.  I have tried a few different storage options for my sponge daubers as my collection has grown over the last few years, none of which have been entirely satisfactory . Finally, I came across this acrylic box that is specifically made for daubers and it is fantastic. It holds 40 daubers, which covers all of the main Stampin' Up! colour collections. It is easy to get them in and out of the box and they can't fall over, which sometimes caused the colours to be transferred. I made up a template for  the colour collections, that I've covered in contact as the daubers come in contact with the top of the box.

 

Of course, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to decorate the outward facing side with some of the retired Cottage Wall DSP and matching Rich Razzleberry and Old Olive cardstock.

 

Finally, I also have a card for you based on the Clean and Simple 135 sketch, which is shown below.

  

With Mother's Day coming soon, I have taken the opportunity to make this card for my MIL (she doesn't look at the Internet, so no chance she will get to see it).  I have used the lovely 'Strength and Hope' stamp set which raises funds for Cancer research.  This is very appropriate as she is also a breast cancer survivor.  The base card is my favourite Marina Mist with the lovely floral from 'Springtime Vintage' DSP.  I've sprayed this with Champagne shimmer mist before adding the embellishments. I love the sentiments expressed in the text behind the butterfly.  I hope she likes it.

Bella Toile Anniversary

Just popping in with a another card using the beautiful 'Bella Toile' stamp set.  I've made this as an anniversary card, but it would be equally suitable as a Valentine's card. I think red, black and white is a really elegant colour combination for these occasions.

Birthday Cupcakes

October is a big birthday month for family and friends and this is the final card for our niece Amelia who turns 4 next week. I’ve inked the ‘Crazy for Cupcakes’ stamp set for the first time to make this card and I really enjoyed colouring the cupcakes on the cake stand. I mixed a few drops of Shimmer Paint with a few drops of Pink Pirouette re-inker to create the icing for the cupcakes, although the shimmer doesn't show much in the photo. Markers and the Aqua painter were used to colour the rest of the cakes.

The Top Note die was perfect to create the blind and curtains for the windows of the cake shop and I used both the frame and the die cut. The double sided DSP pattern stacks are fabulous for this purpose as both sides work so well together.  For the awning, I rolled the scalloped edge over a pencil to give a rounded edge and then used some dimensionals to keep it in place. This was a really fun card to make and I was pretty happy with the result.

 

I also decorated the inside of the card for some added interest for Amelia.

One of my colleagues and his wife are expecting their second child, so I decided to create some projects to celebrate his birth - yes, they know they are having a boy which is really helpful for me. I will have a gift ready to go!

First up, is a special photo card for the proud Grandma (or Mum for that matter) to carry around and show off to her friends. There is a matching envelope box to keep it safe.  I have used the Washington Apple Designer Series Paper and the matching colours Pumpkin Pie and Bashful Blue with Brilliant Blue as a bold contrasting colour.  The 'Fox & Friends' stamp set from the Autumn/Winter Mini catalogue is perfect for this.  First up is a photo of the envelope box, which is made from a commonly available template, that I have customised for a snug fit. I've used the Big Shot and the Timeless Type Junior Alphabet for the wording. I love this font.

The second photo is the front of the card. I've used the sentiment from the Sale-a-bration set 'Whimsical Words' which has been well sponged and mounted in the Silver Hodgepodge Designer Label tag.

The next photo is the inside of the card. On the left is the Birth Announcement details presided over by the cute owl from Fox & Friends. I have printed this on the computer and then cut it out with the Top Note Die. On the right side a photo can be slipped into top opening.

Here is a final photo of the set.

The second project using the same materials is a set of Birth Announcement postcards for the proud parents to send out to friends and family. These are designed to fit into standard envelopes. The announcement cards are double sided, with the details on one side and the photo sleeve on the other in a matching box. The box has been sized to fit the envelopes as well. Here is a photo of the open box showing the announcement cards and envelopes.  It should fit at least 10 cards and envelopes (I've only completed half at the moment).

 

Making boxes to any size is very straightforward.  I just measure the largest item (in this case the envelope) and then add 2mm to the length and wide to get the dimensions of the base. The sides are dictated by how much you want to hold in the box. I made these 30mm as I new I needed to hold quite a few cards and envelopes. To make the top, add a further 2mm to the length and width to ensure a snug fitting lid. This photo shows both sides of the announcement card.

With Mother’s Day less than 2 weeks away, the theme for this month’s Blog Hop is appropriately ‘Women in our Lives’. The first item I have for you is a scrapbook page featuring a photo of my mother taken in the late 1950’s when she was in her twenties. This is one of my favourite photos of her and I love the look of simple elegance captured in black and white. My goal was to create a similar feel on this page, so I will leave you to judge whether that has been achieved.

 

The ribbon tails on the left side of the photo is the handle to pull out the journaling panel. I have typed my text on the computer, printed it onto Whisper White cardstock and then cut it out using the Top Note die and the Big Shot. All the details of the products used are provided below.

The second item I have for you is a Mother’s Day card. You are probably familiar with the Flower Pot card and this is my take on it – the ‘Bowl of Roses’ card! The bowl has been formed from a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock folded in half and then dry embossed. The bowl shape was then cut from the embossed card, with the fold at the bottom. The roses and buds have been stamped in Riding Hood Red and Summer Sun using the ‘A Rose Is A Rose’ 2-step stamp set. The two-toned effect was created by stamping off the first image, then using full colour on the second. The roses have been popped up on the top of the panel that slides into the bowl.  I’ve finished it off with some taffeta ribbon and a sentiment from the new ‘Tiny Tags’ stamp set from the Autumn/Winter Mini Catalogue. The card I have for you is simple but vibrant using black, white and red card stock with the heart image from the Always stamp set. The heart has been embossed white on Basic Black card stock and then embossed black on Whisper White card stock and cut out. The white heart has been popped up on Stampin’ Dimensionals. The jumbo pewter eyelets were set with the fabulous Cropadile. The sentiments are from the Chit Chat Rub-ons currently in the Summer Mini catalogue.
